What is Lapis Lazuli?

Lapis lazuli is not a "jade." But like jade, it is a gemstone that's been prized for thousands of years for its beauty and symbolism. Both have been carved into ornaments, amulets, and jewelry in ancient cultures, and were believed to have protective powers.

While jade is known for its translucency and glow, lapis lazuli is famous for its deep royal blue color, often flecked with golden pyrite that looks like stars in the night sky. In simple terms, lapis is made mostly of a blue mineral called lazurite, mixed with white calcite and sparkly pyrite, giving it a unique, natural sparkle and marbled look.

(Note for the gem nerds: Lapis lazuli is an "aggregate," similar to jade. Just as jadeite jade, also known as fei cui or pyroxene jade, is not pure jadeite but rather -- has jadeite in it, lapis lazuli is not pure lazurite, but has lazurite in it.)

Lapis Meaning

Lapis was treasured in ancient Rome, Greece, China, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. Like jade, lapis is associated with royalty and can symbolize good luck. Lapis lazuli also represents wisdom.

All Mason-Kay lapis pieces come with a certificate verifying that the lapis is natural and untreated.
